Hike Distance: 7.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 220 feet
We decided to head north toward Olympia to hike the Chehalis Western trail. Completing this section allowed us to claim we completed the entire trail length! I wouldn’t recommend this section as it goes through some interesting areas and had homeless people along it, as well as several bridges over highway’s. There were a few nice areas along the way though. We felt fairly safe but this section through Olympia isn’t the most scenic. We were almost finished with this hike when the temperature dropped, the sky turned dark and the wind picked up. It was a good time to end the hike. I should also mention that we found a new rail-to-trail called the Woodland Trail. It intersects the Chehalis Western trail just south of Pacific Avenue in Olympia.
The drive back from this hike was interesting as it alternated between driving rain and heavy snow. Thankfully, it was too warm for the snow to stick. My wife hated driving back but I appreciated it. 🙂
