Powell Butte Nature Park Hike

Hike Distance: 7.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 895 feet

A gorgeous sunny day that felt good to be alive and out on the trail!  I did the usual large loop around the park but also investigated a new area for me on the NW portion called the dogwood loop trail.  It was a fairly clear day to observe Mt. Hood and Jefferson, but Mt. St. Helens was obscured by haze and clouds.

I met an older gentleman towards the end of the hike that had a walker, and we had a nice conversation.  Our discussion led to the realization that he had terminal cancer.  We talked of things he enjoyed doing in the outdoors and that he was making the effort to get outside a lot.  I was inspired by his good attitude and ability to live in the present, and enjoy what he had.  A humbling experience and life lesson about what is important and to enjoy what you have every day!
