High winds and torrential downpour didn’t deter us from going hiking today, but maybe it should have? The rain was so heavy, at the beginning of the hike, that it came down in sheets.
In spite of my concerns I decided to wear the Merrell low-top hiking boots instead of my Lowa waterproof boots. This was a poor decision that I regretted after just 1.5 miles on the road. 😦 As the heavy rain continued I felt the water slowly spread through my socks. On the return trip my socks were soaked and my feet were slowly becoming numb. By the time we got back to the car I couldn’t feel most of my toes and the cold had spread to other parts of my foot. I stripped off my socks and put on new heavy merino wool socks, that my wife gave to me (off her feet). My feet returned to normal temps in about an hour. I won’t be making this mistake again! I need to choose the correct shoe for the weather, and carry extra pairs of socks just in case, especially when it’s cold outside.
The one good thing that came out of wearing the Merrell hiking shoes was that my Plantars Fascia had NO PAIN!!! I’m so thankful for having figured this one out as I was ready to go for physical therapy, and spend money I don’t have. 🙂
