Day 5 Spring Vacation – Cove Palisades State Park Hike Tam-a-Lau Trail

Hike Distance: 10.0 miles      Yearly Hike Distance: 555.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 1007 feet      Yearly Elevation Gain: 72514 feet

Well, our last day of vacation and it’s been a fantastic time.  I chose this trail for the last day as it’s on the way back home and we really enjoyed it the last time we visited.  The desert environment and cliffs around Lake Bill Chinook are breathtaking, to say the least!

The weather had bouts of rain and the clouds were persistent all day.  We figured that the bad weather probably kept most people away, and we only saw one couple during the entire hike.

The Tam-a-Lau Trail ascends up the wall along a cliff and ends up on a plateau.  I personally wouldn’t recommend taking kids up there as there is a long span that is effectively a ledge.  We didn’t feel like this horrible exposure, as it wasn’t sheer, but you’d sure roll a long way, and get hurt. 😦

Once on the plateau, there is a four mile loop that gives some spectacular views of the cliffs, Lake Billy Chinook and the Cascade mountains (on a clear day)!  We also hiked along some additional roads that were on the plateau, which added some mileage to the hike.  Truly a great last day of hiking. 🙂
