Today was a fantastic one on many levels. The most important is that I’ve learned that my iron deficiency doesn’t have any bad causes and can be remedied by a couple of infusions and by taking iron pills every other day (pretty much for the foreseeable future). It turns out that I have a very high level of exercise and don’t have many foods rich in iron. In fact, the main source of iron, red meat, has been off my dietary list for over 38 years. I had to go through many blood tests and digestive tract procedures to determine that the iron deficiency wasn’t caused by a disease or bleeding, and this was a long two month process, and unnerving. I’m so glad this issue is laid to rest and it can be corrected while I get back to a somewhat normal life! I’m hopeful that the iron infusions will also get rid, or reduce, the bad headaches, fatigue and nausea I’ve been experiencing over the past years! That’s right, I’ve probably had low iron (and borderline anemia) for over a half decade and didn’t know it until my Ophthalmologist saw a symptom of anemia in my eye. Since that diagnosis I’ve seen a Gastroenterologist, Hematologist and primary care physician several times. This could have possibly what messed up my PCT hike this past summer. Please see your doctor if you’ve got any symptoms of anemia or iron deficiency!!!
Putting the iron deficiency to rest I found myself being very upbeat and optimistic. It will probably take a while before the iron infusions and tablets have a beneficial effect but I’m hopeful. Somehow, I’ve been able to hike through the fatigue, and other symptoms, so at least life didn’t stop for me. For anyone that is curious, my Ferritin level is what is very low and has been measured to be 10.4. A normal level is above 30, so I’m only at about 1/3 the normal level!
I’ve hiked these trails many times and won’t go into the exact route. Since Battleground Lake has a large trail system I tend to mix up the path taken every time, just to keep the hike interesting. There were several snakes catching rays on the trail and i stopped to take pictures. I also visit the lake itself every time, just to chill out and watch the water and look at reflections. A very satisfying day for sure!
