This is kind of an assessment hike to see how my SI joint is doing, since the stabbing pain came back two days ago. 😦 I guess the cortisone shot just wasn’t very effective, or perhaps my SI joint is really that bad? I didn’t want to go far out, or even far from the car, so that I could make it back despite possible pain.
There’s no doubt that this is the beginning of what might be a longer term health issue, and to be truthful I’m scared. My orthopedist didn’t seem overly concerned but then he doesn’t know the cortisone wore off in less than three weeks. Also, my xray was clear for arthritis. I made the mistake of looking online (which doctors advise against doing) and it seems there are many chronic SI joint sufferers that never appear to find a solution for this indescribable pain. Many of these people have clear xrays and MRIs and the source of the pain is a complete mystery. I tore my meniscus many years ago, and was able to hike despite the dagger like pains going up and down my leg (surgery resolved this issue), but this pain goes way beyond that. I have to stay positive but am finding it a challenge right now. A life without hiking would be unbearable and unacceptable, to me. This isn’t the first issue, nor will it be the last, but it feels insurmountable right now. Enough said.
It was very windy and cloudy during today’s hike, but the mood fit how I felt. I can feel the pain getting more severe but found stretching helped for another one plus miles. Toward the end of the hike the pain got sharper but thankfully the joint help up enough to get back to the car.
I’m glad I went out for a short hike and will need to modify future hikes until physical therapy helps me heal. I’m also thinking of going to a D.O at Rebound as they can manipulate the joint and perhaps accelerate the healing. What’s interesting is that it feels like if my SI joint popped then it would feel okay again. I’ve tried to pop it but it just won’t. I recall getting a sharp pain in the SI joint temporarily, in the past (5-7 years ago), and it popped while walking, and then never re-occured until recently. Go figure the human body?
