We needed to pick our grand-daughter up tonight, and watch her for a few days, so we stayed close to our son’s house for this hike. Champoeg State Park is always a nice choice for a short hike.
We parked at the lot just off Champoeg Road. We had to remember our state park permit, since this is a fee park. The signage, for the trail system, makes it easy to get around here. We decided to head out to the historic Butteville Store, which has been in business since 1863.
The trail to the store is asphalted and is about 3.5 miles from our car. It’s an easy walk and strolls past open fields, disc golf course, over some bridges, past camping area, through the woods and along a highway. The final leg of the hike is along Butteville Road, where you cross Butte Street and arrive at the store.
We went in the store and saw there were many historical artifacts, and in different rooms. Two younger woman were working at the grill and there was a large variety of food, which we didn’t expect. I opted to get some Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream, which was very tasty. We sat outside and enjoyed the ice cream on their covered deck!
Returning toward our car we took a couple side trips. One was down to the Willamette River and the other was to the Kitty M. Newell grave site. There is so much history at this park and it would be a great family activity for sure! We also saw some apple trees along this trail, and my wife wants to come back and pick them when they’re ripe. 🙂 We also noted that a new bridge had been installed where a damaged one had existed for years!
It turned out to be an increasingly rainy, and very humid day, but very enjoyable.
